Interview with
Katharina Kager

Katharina Kager | Quality manager in Leopoldsdorf

Please briefly introduce yourself: What is your name? In which department and at which site do you work? What is your job title?

My name is Katharina Kager and I work at the Leopoldsdorf plant of AGRANA Zucker GmbH in the Marchfeld region. I have been working in the technology department as a quality manager for nearly five years.

Why did you decide to work in a technical profession?

I am a food engineer but also a master baker and confectioner. Over the course of my professional career I have subsequently specialised in the area of quality management. I enjoy working in a technical profession since the tasks are extremely varied and you work closely with lots of very different people.

Which aspects of your everyday working life in a technical profession interest you most?

The best way of describing my day-to-day work would be to say that variety is the spice of life. Things can turn out very differently even if you have a plan, for example when an auditor or an inspector suddenly appears unannounced. What I most enjoy about my job is that I get to work together with many different people from a wide range of different departments, such as metalworkers, electricians and technicians as well as those in purchasing, sales, logistics and many other departments.

My main tasks include maintaining and further developing our quality management system at the site, providing support during audits linked to certification processes (ISO 9001, FSSC 22000, GMP+, Halal, Kosher, BIO, BIO Suisse, GMO-free, ISO 50001 and SMETA) as well as customer audits and inspections, complaints management and various training courses for employees.

The many certifications at the site mean that it is necessary to have an understanding of a wide range of different industry standards. It’s an advantage here that AGRANA attaches a lot of importance to training its employees. This means that it is often possible to attend training courses or workshops in order to optimally update our skill sets.

Can you share with us a tip why women should decide to work in a technical position?

A technical job is in any case an exciting but also a challenging job. Most of the time you find yourself working in a male-dominated environment. This means that you first need to prove yourself and it also helps to be quick-witted. You don’t have to put up with everything and you have to show that you can handle it. Despite this, it is sometimes necessary to ask for help and you shouldn’t be afraid to do so.
